Girlie talk

Faye, Lisa and Claire talk periods, bras and boys

When you did start your periods?

Lisa: I think I was about 11 when I started mine.
Claire: Yeah, I was about the same age.
Faye: I was a bit later than you two, I think I was about 12.

Did you know what periods were?

Faye: A lot of my friends at school had already started so we were always talking about them.
Claire: Yeah, I had some friends who had started early so it wasn't really a surprise.
Lisa: My mum told me about them. Cos I've got three brothers, I couldn't talk to them about it. But mum was great.

How did you feel when you first come on?

Claire: It was still a bit strange but I wasn't really scared cos I knew what to expect.

Is it hard going on stage with raging period pains?

Lisa: I don't know about the others, but beacuse I'm quite fit and healthy I think it helps make the pain easier.
Claire: There was one time when we toured with Britney in America and I was really suffering. But I took some pain killers and managed to get through the show. As soon as it was over I grabbed a hot water bottle and collapsed onto my hotel bed!

How old were you when you got your first bra?

Faye: About 13 - I wasn't a big girl in that department when I was younger so my mum didn't make much of a fuss.
Claire: I was about 11 when I got mine, I remember being embarrassed that I had to wear one.
Lisa: I went out with my mum to the local department store when I was about 12. But because I was training to be a dancer, I had more of a sports bra. It looked like a top and it just gave me a bit more support when I was dancing.

Did you get hassle from boys when you started wearing a bra?

Claire: Yes. I used to get my bra straps pinged - especially in the summer when you just wore your school shirt and the boys could the bra through it.
Faye: Boys didn't really bother me cos I quite tall. I used to get more hassle from the girls.

Did your parents ever embarrass you?

Lisa: My dad's got lots of pics of me when I was younger, everytime I brought a boy back he'd get out the embarrassing ones!
Claire: When we made the video for Tragedy my mum kept crying cos she thought I was really getting married.
Faye: My dad did the same!

Have you ever done something to make your folks squirm?

Claire: Not purposely. But when we shot the vid for Love's got a hold on my heart, my mum phoned me on the set absolutely horrified cos a sleazy newpaper had put Lisa's, Faye's and my head onto bodies of topless models. Loads of people were phoning her to ask her if she'd seen her Claire topless in the paper. It took a while to convince her it wasn't actually us!
Lisa: That was embarrassing.
Faye: Even though it wasn't true!

In Steps, is there much pressure on you to work out?

Lisa: I put pressure on myself to train cos I wanted to be famous.
Claire: I didn't pay much attention to keeping fit because I only wanted to sing. But when I joined my first group called TSD I started to get fitter.
Faye: We all go the gym quite regularly. We have to dance on stage for over an hour at least four days a week.

Have you ever asked a boy out?

Faye: Yes, I've done it a few times.
Lisa: So have I, but not recently cos I've got a boyfriend.
Claire: No, I was quite shy when I was younger. I might do now but I'd still be worried in case he'd say no.

Tell us your top beauty tip?

Faye: Always moisturise before you put on your make-up.
Claire: Apply lip balm before you do your lip liner. And always have a stash of cotton wool buds in your make-up bag - they're so handy.
Lisa: Use eyelash curlers! They really open up small eyes.

What are your fave beauty products?

Faye: I swear by a product called Biotherm and Oil of Olay.
Claire: One of the best things I live by is drinking lots of water - and it's great cos it doesn't cost anything!
Lisa: Anything by Clinique. I know they're expensive, but the products do work wonders!

What's the best thing about sleepovers?

Faye: Gossiping with your mates about boys from school! When we first started in Steps we used to have girlie sleepovers and talk about Lee and H.
Claire: Yeah, but we don't do it so much now we have our own flats.

Have you ever fallen out with your friends?

Faye: Yes, but as you grow up you tend to argue over the silliest things.
Lisa: I've never really fallen out with my mates and I'm still really close to a lot of my old school friends.
Claire: Friends usually row about boys but I think a close relationship is worth more than any guy.

What was your fave outfit when you were 11?

Claire: I used to wear this grey skirt with a matching top that had Fame written across it.
Lisa: I had some jeans that I'd cut to just above the knee. I loved 'em cos I'd made them myself.
Faye: A blue ra-ra dress with a scoop neck.

Since Steps have you had any fashion disasters?

Lisa: I hated my red dress in the 5,6,7,8 video and accidently lost it one night - what a shame!
Claire: I had to wear this tight cat suit once - it was nasty!
Faye: My red dress from the 5,6,7,8 video was really hideous.

Do you wish you could be 13 now?

All: No way!
Lisa: I wouldn't want to be 13 again, even though it was loads of fun and I had a great time. When you're older you can do so much more and you haven't got exams to worry about.
Faye: No, you just have to worry about bills and stuff!
Claire: I wouldn't mind being 18 again but not 13.
