STEP TWO
Story filed by Popjustice on Monday, February 09, 2004
If you're finding Blazin' Squad too gangsta, Busted too metal and Will Young too avant garde, there's some exciting news over on the Popjustice messageboard, where Steps' old webmaster has been spilling the beans about a new band currently being put together by the band's old manager Tim Byrne - who also invented a1, allSTARS and, er, Stamford Amp.
It's all a bit hush-hush at the moment but apparently the entire Steps team (with the merciful exception of the band members, who were always the weak links) are involved. Which means Byrne, Jive Records, Topham & Twigg and - he invented comebacks, son - Pete Waterman. We hear there are boys ("particularly attractive") and girls, and the music sounds like "Sugababes collid[ing] with Girls Aloud, Steps and S Club 8". (A*Teens, then.)
We don't have long to wait, either. The whole project is nearing completion and could be unveiled within a matter of months

No offence but "Why?"
There isn't a market for Pop Music at this moment, damn even one of the most successful acts, Atomic Kitten, are on a break ...
I really doubt another "Steps" as such would make any sort of major impact. Jive UK is non-exsistant, believe me I know .., so being there isn't going to help their cause, as for having Pete on board, then they are going to need all the help in the world.

but you have to remember that uncle pete actaully knew what he was doing with steps!!!
we wouldn't have that funky waving one finger in the air dance (ofs) if it was for his production ;)

LOL not doubting that but that was in 1998 .... it is now 2004 and One True Voice didn't do that great either.
Pop has moved on a bit since 1998, even Steps moved on towards the end of their career, I don't think Pete has the same hits-pulling power as he once had. There are a lot better pop producers out there at this moment in time, some are sitting right in the UK too
Matt, I think the reason is they're trying to get pop in the market again. :P
If it's Sugababes, Girls Aloud, S Club 8, & Steps colliding then I'm happy. And it's not Ace*Teens, they're S Club colliding with SC8 & Steps. :P

One True Voice?? The problem there was the style. There songs weren't particularly catchy, and none of there voices stood out. (Even though they all sounded good).
Pete has still got it. However, he's got to find a way of producing cathy tracks that pass as good music. Can't be as corny as some of Steps tracks.

Personally, I think Pete has been lucky. There's nothing skillfull about making a good pop group. Think about how unlikely it all is:
How unlikely is it that the five members should actually be born.
How unlikely is it that the five people went to the auditions (Claire nearly didn't!)
How unlikely is it that they got on so well (with each other all the time for five years!)
How unlikely is it that they should have hit after hit.
When you look at it, some of it's down to luck - the right place at the right time. It'll be difficult to repeat their success, and I wouldn't want it repeating because Steps were brilliant! Hopefully this new group will fail miserably and then people will say "Steps were better than this!".

Maybe he'll have good luck again. While I love S Club 8 as my STEPS replacement, there's something I can't connect with... They're a step too young for me, and there's too bloody many of them.
STEPS has a good spot and a good rep with me. I'm down with them trying it again...

Matt, I think the reason is they're trying to get pop in the market again. :P
But it doesn't happen like that.
When the main pop artists are not doing out-and-out pop it speaks volumes, even Atomic Kitten are having "a break" ...
We have probably a tiny handful of acts doing real-pop music, all the other pop-stayers are on that sort of boundary line where they aren't doing real pop but aren't doing anything else either ...
We are not in the early 90's anymore. People are predicting that perhaps Dance will take off this year, so look out for lots of those crappy pop/dance songs all failing (like before) whilst competing with the proper Dance outfits.
New albums from The Prodigy, Oasis etc. this year are expected to do well, sure isn't pop again .. there are no huge pop albums due this year.
Pop is back in its early 90s cycle, its still there as it never dies, but there are other genre's which are more successful at this moment.
"Sugababes collid[ing] with Girls Aloud, Steps and S Club 8".
To me that says "Great, another unoriginal group" .. taking on the Sugababes is the 1st bad idea! Girls Aloud have their own brand of very loud in-your-face pop, and SC8 are probably one of the rare "pop" acts still going so thats the only thing. And saying "(A*Teens, then.) " - and they've had such huge success in the UK haven't they?!

What BryneBlood (Who I've never really rated as a management team) are doing this then they are hoping that the Steps community helps them from the start to start building a fanbase, and I doubt many of them will as they will have moved on from Steps and like something else now or just don't care.

AAAAH!! Complete agreement with Matt here!
The music scene has changed, and Pop has suddenly died out and it died after 2001, when Steps split. Bringing back a new steps with POP music with pete waterman, isnt such a good idea. Its just asking to be laughed at.
Even if the "new steps" went into a different style of music such as R&B, or rock, they would still be laughed out.

We should make a new STEPS-esque group called SPETS. Two of us will have talent, one will be sorta pretty, one guy will sorta be able to sing and look like a bit camp, and the other will just be the charming one.
Oh, right, and there'll be a ban right here on live singing. We simply must not have that!
"Here they are with their debut single '2, 4, 6, 8' it's SPETS!!" *Applause*
(I think we've been through this before.)
i personally dont think this is a good idea at all. this is what i would call desperate for money.

I agree I don't think they might not be as good as steps, but its all about timing. If they time the releases right they might be better or they will gradually build up over time just as steps did.

Sorry, but I doubt that very much. My main prob with S Club 8 is none of them stand out in the crowd. There voices sound really basic. It's like the thing I said about Lee, if I heard them on the radio, it wouldn't be there voices I reconise, just the overall sound of there music. Whereas Steps all had there own individual voice. Well, Fyae Claire and H especially. Not so much Lee.

What I don't understand is why the new "Steps"?
Can't they get a original name if they are taking on a different approach as Steps did.
Do they want to build on the Steps reputation or think that all Steps fan's are idiots who will buy the stuff just because the name is Steps but the product is totally different. They are mounting a dead horse. This is going nowhere.
Not to be rude, but Steps was big in the UK and that's it.
Except for Tragedy, even Lately got more airplay in South Africa then any Steps song.
I doubt if this will go through.

This isn't a new group called "STEPS," but rather, the next STEPS-style group (3 girl-2 guy forumula) in a very similar clean-tidy-pop equation.

Perhpas they could called themselves PESTS.. ha ha...
I may buy their records, but I'm really surprised Byrne Blood is involved in this new Steps project.. Seems like they got Topham/Twigg to work with PWL again, seemingly.. Anyway, would Claire have left Byrne Blood cause she can't agree with the new Steps project?

whatever happend to the "lets wait and see" mentality. sounds like your writing these guys off before you hear anything. jack says hes heard some of their stuff and hes raving about them so at least the music must be good. so what if pop isnt selling, theres enough people still talking about steps after all this time so theres definately a gap in the market. and from what i hear, its not steps mark 2, its just the same people behind them.
so lets wait and see. :P

Make muffins with egg, flour, milk, butter and blueberries and you have some pretty good muffins.
Make muffins with egg, flour, milk, butter and blackberries, and you're going to have very similar muffins, that aren't that different from the originals.
They're putting together the same recipe as Steps, so we'll see...

Well Steps were called Steps because they were all about dance steps.
Pop are called Pop because they sing pop music?
But I can see the headlines already... "Who popped Pop's pop bubble?" :D

Well, either they'll be called "Pop," because they sing pop music, or because they're all evil bubble-people who pop at the end of each show.
I'm looking forward to seeing what the end result is. This sounds dumb, but I'm hoping they stick to the STEPS formula of bad miming, catchy dance routines, and someone very "H" (sexually ambiguous, but endearing).
Edited to correct a grammatical error.
