Kelly Clarkson inks NASCAR deal
LOS ANGELES - American Idol champ Kelly Clarkson has inked an agreement with NASCAR and will be extensively associated with the brand for the year 2007. NASCAR said that this was the biggest deal it has ever signed with an artist.
The Grammy-winning Clarkson will be required to perform at an at-track concert, besides attending the Nextel Cup Series Awards Ceremony. Other duties include a TV spot and NASCAR's charitable endeavors. NASCAR has previously roped in artists like Jewel, Red Hot Chili Peppers, Lenny Kravitz, Sheryl Crow and LeAnn Rimes for promotional activities.
The deal with Clarkson comes into force on February 18 when Clarkson will perform "Nextel Tribute To America" live on Fox Television. This jig will be aired just before the Daytona 500 kicks off. The television spot called "NASCAR. How bad have you got it?" will be beamed on FOX, TNT, ABC, ESPN and SPEED all through the season.
Commenting on the deal, Clarkson revealed that she was a self-confessed NASCAR fan. "It's been cool doing things with NASCAR in the past and I'm honored to have the opportunity to play such a huge role for the sport in 2007," she added. "I look forward to hanging out with the fans, drivers and the entire NASCAR community."
Clarkson will also be the spokesperson and ambassador on NASCAR day on May 18. She has had a dream year in 2006 with her latest album, Breakaway, enjoying a successful run and netting her two Grammys.
Sarah Nettinga, managing director at NASCAR Digital Entertainment said they were delighted to be associated with Clarkson, "NASCAR's relationship with Kelly Clarkson will be unique not only due to the depth of her involvement in the sport all season long, but her enthusiasm for NASCAR as a fan of NASCAR will surely develop into an unparalleled relationship," she added.
