Eva Avila has a full schedule
By DAVID SCHMEICHEL -- Sun Media
If success on Canadian Idol can really be spun into a Cinderella story, then Eva Avila is one step closer to living happily (ahem) eva after.
Avila -- the 20-year-old Quebecer who triumphed in Idol's 2006 season -- has been enjoying a pretty wild ride of late.
She's released her debut album -- tackling tracks by Chantal Kreviazuk, Raine Maida and Cyndi Lauper -- she's sung the national anthem at the Grey Cup in Winnipeg, she's in the midst of her first headlining tour, and this weekend, she'll attend the 2007 Juno Awards, where she's nominated for best new artist.
"I actually found out (about the nomination) at the Juno press conference," says Avila. "My publicist called and said, 'You're going to have to cancel your rehearsals,' and I was already freaking out, because it was the last week of rehearsals. So I told him it better be important, and he said he was taking me to the Juno press conference."
When she heard her name read as a nominee, she was in shock for several minutes, thinking only that her mother was going to be thrilled to hear the news.
So with the ceremony in Saskatoon just days away, has Avila prepared an acceptance speech, or at least started practising her "gracious loser" face?
"Yeah, I don't think I'm going to be pulling the Faith Hill thing," she laughs. "I'm just going to expect the worst and hope for the best."
Of her last stopover in Winnipeg -- where she also took in a gala concert by Tom Cochrane and the WSO -- Avila says even she wasn't prepared for the sub-polar temperatures that wreaked havoc with her voice.
"It was very nerve-wracking and I was stressed out, but it was definitely a one-of-a-kind experience," she laughs. "But yeah, from a technical standpoint, like as a singer, it was hard, because it was really freezing."
