Canadian Idol winner Eva Avila proves her success is more than just luck.
Article by Liza Herz, Photography by David Moo King

Perched on a couch in a Toronto photo studio, Eva Avila, looking cozy in a baby-pink hoodie and baggy green cargos, turns her Starbucks cup to read the epigram on the back. "Peace is more than just the absence of war".

The quotation makes the 19-year old pop star think of another famous saying, from the movie Dead Poets Society. "Seize the day", Eva says, "But sucking all the marrow out of life doesn't mean choking on the bone."

In the topsy-turvy aftermath of her Canadian Idol win last fall, Avila had to make sure she seized a little time for herself -- hard to do when you're Canada's unofficial girl du jour.

Today is a good example. Settled in for an all-day teen glow photo shoot, Eva sits patiently while her unruly brown curls are tamed by hairstylist Anna Barseghian. Her unadorned, fresh face is also due for a total glam-over by celebrity Maybelline makeup artist Troy Surratt, who's flown in from New York especially for the occasion. (Avila has an association with Maybelline and her makeup bag brims with treats from the company.)

With a few deft brush strokes from Troy, she is transformed from knockabout girl-next-door into a dark-eyed goddess in a Diane Von Furstenberg dress. But then, in a characteristic display of seizing the day, Eva The Imp turns to the assembled crew and sticks out her tongue.

"I had a one month holiday at Christmas and saw my family and friends, did regular stuff like I used to and stayed in my pyjamas," she reports, as if staying in your jammies past the breakfast hour remains the last word in self-indulgence.

Despite growing up in Gatineau, Quebec -- right across the river from Ottawa, where Alanis Morisette started her pop music career 10 years earlier -- Eva says she found her greatest inspiration closer to home. "My dad inspired me," she says of her musician father, who is from Peru, and who kept a recording studio in the family's basement. "He brought music into my life."

Gearing up for a national tour that includes a three-night stand of homecoming shows in Gatineau, Avila's life is currently chock-a-block with photo shoots, concert rehearsals and phone interviews.

She happily admits it's all a learning opportunity, like today's teen glow shoot. "I love getting hair and makeup tips," she says, adding that she "used to have no style. I would never buy trendy stuff, just comfy clothes. Now I'm developing a personal style -- not just copying everything I see."

EVA'S LOOK

Troy Surratt, consulting makeup artist for Maybelline New York wanted to focus on her lashes and give a rosy glow to her skin. He emphasized Eva's "really amazing soulful brown eyes with really dense, thick lashes." He swept gold shadow from the Expertwear eye shadow quad in Sunlit Bronze on the lid, with Shadow Stylist in Elegant Pearl on the inner eye and finished with Volum'Express mascara in Very Black on her lashes. To make Eva look "really girly and pretty," he warmed her cheeks with Expertwear blush in Gentle Rose, and used Shinylicious lip gloss in Lolly Pink on her lips.
