Kelly Clarkson's Irvine connection

Kelly Clarkson may share her time between houses in Texas and L.A., but she seems to have a spot in her heart for Irvine.

A sore spot, I should say: The last heartbroken song on her reportedly deeply personal (yet almost scuttled) third album, My December, was penned just after her revelatory performance at Bren Events Center last, uh, December. The location so factored into what she was going through, she tells Entertainment Weekly in this cover-story interview, that "Irvine" became the title of the tune. (To refresh your memory, read my review of that twice-postponed show.)

EW's Dave Karger asked, "Why did you want to make such a personal album right now?"

Clarkson replied: "All of my favorite records - Jagged Little Pill, any U2 record, Tragic Kingdom - I love how it's like a story from beginning to finish. Especially Jagged Little Pill. The last song on (My December), "Irvine," it literally was the lowest point I've had in my life. I wrote it after my Irvine show on my last tour. I was just so burned-out. I was really struggling at getting somebody out of my life and finding people that really cared. The whole song is a prayer. I wrote it in te bathroom of the venue after the show. I had to cancel my meet-and-greet; it's the only meet-and-greet I've ever canceled. I couldn't smile. It was just a really, really bad night."

Sure didn't look that way from where I was sitting - which just goes to show what a pro Clarkson has become. If, however, you were supposed to get a handshake and a smile backstage that night, well, now you know why you got turned away.

My December drops June 26.
