don't know the technical term for this, but u get one of those leads which u plug in the AUX socket of your CD player into the back of ur comp and record the input.

I heard if you hold down ALT it bypasses the secruity feature,

eh? don't really get how that should work... most record companies don't actually bother with the feature, cos usually big albums are leaked via promos before release which obviously are never protected.

I was reading a computer (geek) site. It said the way the protection of copying/playing the cds works is when you insert the cd into the computer it copies a temporary file to the computer which stops it playing.
It mentioned if you hold down ALT when inserting it this stops the file being copied so you can play it on the computer.

I never tried it, so not sure if it works.

Alt is one, the other way was to draw a line around the edge of the CD with a felt tip.

Search google for the record label name and playback on PC as some labels use different techiniques

I'm sure there is a way around it as everything is crackable cos its only been programmed by someone

given up looking it's just talking about the problem!

i guess this is a question i'll have to ask my ICT teacher (he's fantastic - he gives us loads of cool information for eg; he taught us how to get secret Pinball up in Word!!!)

Its actually the Shift key, which does work with some cd's.
There are more and more record companies using anti copy techniques now.

Apart from obvious reasons, One of them is Napsters back...And its Legal.
They have a deal with the 5 major labels to allow downloads at a price per download.
The idea which has been on trial in the USA since around October, is to buy a pre-paid card (like you do on mobile top-ups) which will give you a code to type in and will allow you x numbers of downloads.
Since the Record labels are behind this, along with Microsoft and Roxio (the company that produces the majority of CD writing software) It will become more and more common.

This is direct Analogue recording, although it will record the cd, it will also record the "mains hum" and "background buzz", similar to the way you get hiss on a cassette, as it is not extracting the digital data.

I've only had this problem with a Desitny's Child album, all the others, like Abs' album have like track 1 that doesn't play, and the rest is fine.

which cd is it ?
and does the pc actually play the cd or is it "locked out" (i.e. does the cd-rom behave as if theres no cd in it)

it's A New Day Has Come by Celine Dion.

i put it in, Windows Media Player comes up but it says that it's a format it can't recognise!

On the Oz "Be With You" single i have its protected but when you put the CD in it appears with a little player that plays the music but you can't copy it so what i do is open up Windows Movie Maker and extract the files from the CD into Movie Maker and then click SAVE MOVIE and it will save it as a Windows Audio/Video file - works for me!

oh yeah and i forgot to say i have a DVD Interlectaul player on my computer so i can watch DVD like in the Cinema (using the WHOLE SCREEN OF THE COMPUTER - and actually the whole screen) so i don't really use the windows media player cos i don't like my windows media player (or put it in my words it doesn't like me)

some of the anti-copy cd's r getting quite cunning, espec the dvd's.
Theyre linking the vid file with a secondary audio track so that when u decode and rip u get the secondary audio track rather than the correct one !
