We're still reeling from the news that Lisa Scott-Lee (pictured, right, looking for a new flat) is no longer signed to Mercury Records. It all seemed to be going so well, but after two singles - that's total sales, by the way - she's out on her arse. Perhaps she should start covering it up - it's very cold outside.
According to Ananova, "the former Steps singer was told of the decision during a meeting with bosses at Mercury Records", which makes it sound as if it was casually dropped into the meeting somewhere among 'Any other business'. "So Lisa, we've discussed the marketing budget for the album, the small tour to coincide with the comeback single, and you're dropped."
Here's what Lisa had to say about it all.

"There are times in life when you have to move on."
(Translation: "There are times in life when you're dropped by your record label.")

"I have got some great new tracks."
(Translation: "I have a song which was written by world-class songwriter Kylie Minogue. Anyone remember 'Feels So Good', the song she wrote for Atomic Kitten? No? Oh. Well anyway, the song must be really good because Kylie would definitely give away a potential hit to me! Especially when her own album is doing so badly!!!")

"It's probably best all round if I find a new home for my music."
(Translation: "It's probably best for Mercury if I find a new home for my music.")

"I am getting married in August and will probably bring my album out around the same time."
(Translation: "I am getting married in August and will probably be on the cover of OK magazine around the same time. Or maybe Now. Actually, does anyone have the number for Hot Stars?")

What adds a 'tragi' element to Lisa's comic solo career is the fact that her Mercury album sampler - which has reached semi-mythic status among fans - did contain one truly great song, called 'Back In Time', which may now never be heard.
What pop needs for artists like Lisa, Samantha Mumba et al is a label like Sanctuary, who've made a great business out of picking up slightly dumper-bound artists like Iron Maiden, Spiritualized and Kelly Osbourne. Sanctuary don't need to go "Oh boo hoo hoo you're dropped" when albums don't immediately go triple platinum, because their expectations have been far more realistic and, crucially, they haven't spunked away millions of pounds before the record's even in the shops.
Hardly a blueprint for overhauling the music industry, but if there's a pop entrepeneur out there and enough almost-ex popstars whose egos would allow low-selling singles and albums in exchange for the satisfaction of continuing to release music, where's the harm?
