View Full Version : End of the Road DVD...

Just wondering - a lot of people complain that the End of The Road DVD is dubbed but I've just bought a promo copy of the DVD and this doesn't appear to be dubbed... are only parts of the show dubbed or have I got a special copy here?
It also says on the back "We apologise for the audio drop-out in the show" - is this on all copies?

Yeah. I've got the video, and it says the same. It's in 'Love's Got A Hold On My Heart', but it's only for a few seconds. We all know the song anyway! :D

Aww it's really emotional - Claire, H and Lisa look like they're about to cry all the way through it (and Claire does at the very start and the end!)

Yeah god knows what happened with the audio dropout, someone must have dropped something when the DVD was being finalised LOL
Although the PPV show had audio issues they where not where the DVD has problems LOL
Skittles
7th Jan 2004, 16:40
You think they'd have dubbed over the audio dropouts - an easy enough thing to do and it would be less noticable than a total sound drop out.
...but this DVD definately is live as far as I can tell - all that's been mimed so far is Deeper Shade Of Blue at the start and possibly Believe by H.

I'd have to fish out the original PPV broadcast to compare, to be fair I've not really sat down and watch the DVD version, although the look I did have the video quality is top notch!

ooh... Bittersweet is definately dubbed in parts... comparing it with the DVD and the clip that i put on the website after the relaunch.
having said that, the sound quality on the dvd is much better... so i'm not sure now...

I've spotted an editing mistake :)) right at the end, Lisa grabs Claire's hand and then the camera moves in to a closer shot and she does it again... hehe.
God and Lisa taking H and Claire on a guilt trip at the end! "and I just want to thank the crew, but most of all I want to thank YOU GUYS" *points at h and claire*
iluvuClarabelle
7th Jan 2004, 19:31
lol Chris - theres lots more than 2 mimed songs on there!
they only sing live in *counts* 7 songs :)
but the live numbers r brill so that makes up for it...
also Lisa wasnt angry with them at this point - so she WAS actually being genuine lol!
Skittles
7th Jan 2004, 19:59
lol... so when did she turn all evil then... and why?
are you sure they only sang 7 live? i'm pretty sure that all of the following songs were live... (by the way, do you have the ppv video or the end of the road dvd?)
Love's Got a Hold On My Heart
After The Love Has Gone
Heartbeat
Here and Now
If You Believe
It's The Way You Make Me Feel
Hand on your heart
Words are not enough
I know him so well
Bittersweet [partly dubbed on DVD]
You'll Be Sorry [nearly totally dubbed but you can hear the live h and claire in the background]
Last Thing On My Mind
Better The Devil You Know
Summer of Love [dubbed in parts]
Better Best Forgotten
Tragedy
Chain Reaction
I'm not saying that they definately sang all of these live, but they sounded different to the CD version... whether they simply mimed to a special "live" recording is another matter...

the whole show was mimed wasnt it - over pre-re-recorded vocals.... except from DSOB and one for sorrow - which were studio recordings..
oh and the slow ones...
i like the bit in bittersweet when Lisa sings "finally Im free" when on the WANE CD the line goes "finally you're free"
lol
lol i also noticed that LSL points to H&Claire when she says thanks...
tho - she sings shes free - yet makes it clear a few days later that she wasnt happy with the split and all that crap... hmmm *ponders motives*

6 or 7 songs were sung live on the Gold Tour - i cant b assed listing thme but its the slow ones - the only exception is that the last 30 secs of Fayes solo is mimed but the rest of her song is live - i have the PPV version btw - im glad i dont have the tampered with one!
oh btw - yeh most of the fast songs like ATLHG and HAN were re-recorded basically to sound live and to be a bit different

Little of that tour was LIVE live, as many have said. You can watch them bugger up their miming in parts. Espcially perma-buggering H and Claire. That's also why everything was in the same spot (like, the little solo parts in the chorus) - So that when they mimed it, it was still the same for them. Some songs with the headworn mics, were, for once, sung live. But you can tell when they are live, because Claire sang flat A LOT (although I do not say, for one second, I have perfect pitch).
A question - Were the dubbed parts TERRIBLY obvious, like a really bad edit, or fairly smooth?

A lot of it was miming over re-recorded tracks that weren't perfected to sound live. They did sing about seven songs live though I think.
And I just listened to the Bittersweet B-Side Single Version and if I'm in the place you're talking about (SeanieB) it's "I can see that finally I'm" not "youre"
Skittles
8th Jan 2004, 08:27
It says "Now and then we all can lose our way, tomorrow's going to bring a better day, and I can see that finally you're free..." on the CD.
Ahh right... thanks for clearing that up about the prerecorded vocals... I was confused because they sounded live and yet they were dancing around energetically!
I'm glad they made the effort though to make it sound live.

oh and just to correct Phlly beef (again sorry!) but on the Gold Tour none of the songs they performed with head mics were sung live - they were re-recorded live but not sung live on the nite :)
(just for pointless info here - the only song theyve ever sung live with head mics on is Ghostbusters on the Next Step Tour!)

u know what i haven't even got a copy when the tour was released i heard it was released the week after it came out (when it entereed the chjarts after the 1st week) and i didn't know b4 that so i hadn't saved up for it at all - so i spent a week saving up for the dvd and bought it the week after (as i had the money - well i did save up £13 the week i heard it was released but i thought dvd's costed bought £15/£16 and i hadn't got that much neway till the next week) and when i went to buy the dvd (i hate vhs cos my vhs player hates me and won't let me play vhs without breaking/damaging the vhs itself) the shops didn't have a copy and they said that it wasn't efven released aty all
but u know about tours from artists if they release it on vhs/dvd their record company edit it and dubb them - S Club 7's record company did that S Club's Carnival tour on the DVD and S Club Party was actually dubbed cos Jo S CLub she always is holding a note down for good little while when performing live and on the S CLub Carnival dvd S CLub party was dubbed cos u can see Jo holding a few notes down but no sound came when she does that at all

mm.... according to different reviews, the WISG on the Next Step tour might be live too.... haha... another song being live if that's true....
i agree that .... all songs except the slow ones were mimed on the Gold tour..... coz they sounded too stable with those dance routines and not so stable when they sang the ballads..... and how come they could sing and dance for a whole night long without the ear piece monitors.... but when they stop the dance to sing the ballads, all of them very suddenly put on the monitors together??.... mm.... :D

S Club Carnival is so dubbed, on the "Dont Stop Movin" DVD, they sang DSM, obv same performance, but when Jo sings "just listen to the sound let it make you come alive" on DSM, Brad is going like "ooh, oooh, ooooooooohhhhhhhh!!!" but in Carnival hes mouthing "ooh, oooh, ooooooooohhhhhhhh!!!" and no "ooh, oooh, ooooooooohhhhhhhh!!!" is happening!!
Then in "You" when Jon is "singing" theyve dubbed Rachels voice over his!!
Shaggy
8th Jan 2004, 20:11
On the night, they may of had a few problems with the ear monitors. For example as Claire sings her solo Hand on.... everytime you hear that women speaking (on ppv) she tends to go really out of tune so maybe she could hear the women through the monitors. Or she might of jus B) t had a bad night. Hey, happens to the best of us. They sounded great at Birmingham.

just to re-state the point - all the ballads on Gold (starting from IYB) are sung live except for the end of IYB.
plus Lee's solo was live - k?!
none of the fast songs were live.
About WISG on the next step tour - its possible it was sung live then dubbed.... but theyre deffo not singing live on the video!

Was WISG live on live@wembley? I'm pretty sure it is, but again, they could be miming to a 'live' version.
A shame that they conned us! lol... especially on their 'live' tour, where they hardly sang live at all!

I don't think it would be humanlly possible to sing and dance at the same time for a whole performance. One time in the day of H and Claire, when they finished a performance of All Out Of Love, they had an interview and claire couldn't get her breath back for ages so that proves they would never do it. There only human after all. They've allways done the dance routines well though. good on em! B)

she was really quite out of it that night! she was really upset and u can clearly tell the look on her face wen she realises shes missed her bit - she goes to raise her mic up towards her mouth but she knows shes too late to sing it...
so yeh - it was just a lil mistake by Lisa

10th Jan 2004, 20:23
I watched it earlier and it's obvious because after she misses her line, Clare sings a line and then it goes back to Lisa again, but Lisa raises her mic to her mouth before Clare starts singing, so she obviously didn't want to miss her cue again.

Ok... this is interesting. lol.
On the CD (I'm listening to the version on The Last Dance) it's Faye that sings the line "He needs his fantasy and freedom".
On the End of the Road DVD, obviously the line is missed but you can still hear it - it sounds like Lisa when it says "fantasy" but when you listen to the word "freedom" it sounds like Faye. Lisa's got a very unique singing style and I think Faye's just sang that word in the way Lisa sings, which makes the whole lot sound Lisa-ish.
I think that it was Faye who missed her line, not Lisa.
On another note - was the line dubbed in, or were they miming to a 'live' version? I can't really tell... it looks live because when Lisa sings live she screws up her face a lot. :D

yip there are 2 versions
ikhsw was re-recorded especially for the almighty mix (which is almost unheard of) which is where lisa swaps the line to "learnt about the man"
also if you listen to the mix the vocals are pblatantly differnt.
As foir the dubbed over line on the dvd, it is faye who misses her line - she's crying, and they cut away to a long shot so you don't notice it so much.
But on the ppv they are actuall on faye as she misses the line

...but does anybody have the PPV video of I Know Him So Well I can download?
I'm just watching You'll Be Sorry on the DVD... it's strange. The sound in the chorus is weird and the vocals in the verse are really washed out - it's almost ghostly. lol.
...and are there any more mistakes that I've not noticed yet?
:D
Skittles
16th Jan 2004, 23:03
Ooh... I've noticed another mistake - in the Words are not Enough video near the end - Lisa uncovers the mirror and you see H's reflection in it, and he comes into shot at the left of the screen (you'll need it in widescreen).
Then in the next shot, it's a wide shot of the whole room, and H is miles away from Lisa, walking backwards! There's probably loads of mistakes like this in their videos. :D
(added later) actually, the whole opening sequence to the Words are not Enough video is screwed up! When Claire goes up to the mirror in the wide shot, Lisa is stood there. In the close up, Lisa is gone. In the reverse shot, Lisa is walking towards the mirror, and you can see her reflection, suggesting that Lisa is stood where to camera is. In the wide shot Lisa is there again. Then as Claire is pulled into the mirror and Faye reaches for her, Lisa is gone again. Then on Faye's close up, Lisa is in the background again walking towards the mirror! Confused? I know I am ... lol.
I'm starting to wonder now - note that they are only actually in the video right at the beginning and that Lee is never shown close up with the rest of Steps. The only time he's in it is when he turns into computerised Lee - which he may have filmed seperately from the rest of them? Perhaps Lee refused to do the video, and so they said "Right, well we'll do a computer one then"?
Also... does anybody else agree that it's the worst Steps video? lol... it's so random and senseless.

17th Jan 2004, 05:27
*sighs* lol! - emmm first off im positive its Lisa who misses her line in the live IKHSW (and yeh they did sing it live on the night) - its not only me that thinks it was Lisa but this was first mentioned 2 years ago and has been since and most of the fans agree its Lisa who misses her line :)
also - lol, im sure Lee didnt refuse to do the video LMAO - why would he?!
It probably is one of their worst vids (ive only watched it a few times lol) - but they certainly spent a good bit on it - it was 300,000/400,000 quid to make!
Skittles
17th Jan 2004, 14:32
we know it was faye that missed her line, because as said before, she was crying on the PPV version and the camera was on her (they were obviously expecting faye to sing it, that's why the camera was on her) and she sings it on the cd too.
as for the video... hmm it probably was expensive, but I reckon it was quite cheap in comparison to their other videos;
take Last Thing on my Mind - you need to get steps and the film crew to Cuba, seal off an area for filming (pay the local authorities), pay the extras to be in it, pay for a film crew to stay a few nights in Cuba to film it (and they'll need food and rooms too), pay for somebody to edit it together and then add any special effects (ok, so there aren't any in LTOMM as far as I can remember, but anyways).
or it's the way you make me feel - they needed to book the house for a few days, pay all the dancers and crew, get them accomodation nearby, have all the lighting and special effects, not to mention rehearsals for the video, which weren't needed in WANE.
of course, they made allowances - they had a few expensive videos, and a few cheapo ones too - i know him so well and better the devil you know. :D
lol... it's also quite weird when steps turn into their computer versions, because their arms grow really long! the only lifelike one is Lee.
right... i'll stop rambling now

i guess STEPS were professional enough to do the show properly instead of different members crying in different songs...... like there're "solo-crying" and "group-crying" sessions....

The DVD is the same show as the PPV version with a few differences:
1. Parts were trimmed to make it flow better.
2. Where the live singing was dodgy the DVD was dubbed over. You can notice this in I Know Him So Well - Faye misses her line, but the line is dubbed over.
3. The DVD was edited slightly - a close up of Faye crying was replaced with a wide shot.
4. Mistakes which weren't on the PPV appeared on the DVD - for example at the end of the concert Lisa takes hold of Claire's hand, and in the next shot she does it again.

soz Chris - but i have to say it is Lisa who missed her line!
Faye had sung that line previously but in the latest occasions wen they had sung it (ie Showtime at the stadium and TOTP) it was Lisa who sang that line.
Plus the camera isnt on Faye (not on PPV anyway) wen that line is meant to be sung, it was on her b4 that, then it cut to Claire, and wen that line was meant to be sung the first half of it Claire is on camera, then its a wide shot.
Sorry i keep contradicting you but i know im right here :)
oh and btw WANE was one of their most expensive vids (even tho it may not look it!) - not the most expensive tho :)

I'm starting to wonder now - note that they are only actually in the video right at the beginning and that Lee is never shown close up with the rest of Steps.
LOL well I think this is more likely to be because Lee was never the most instrumental part of Steps was he?
Also I still think Lisa misses her line, because after the silence (which I never noticed on PPV), as I said, it's Clare's line but Lisa raises her mic very early, as if to be sure she doesn't miss another line.
And anyway LOL, how can anyone know who was meant to sing a line if none of them did...

What are the extras on the End Of The Road DVD? Anyone know?
Skittles
21st Jan 2004, 17:05
There's the main video, and also a scene selection thing where you can skip to whatever song you want.
Then there is a "Do you remember?" section, where you see some pictures of members of Steps doing part of a dance routine flash quickly on the screen. Then it shows all of the images on the screen and you have to click on the images in the same order that they came up in - like a memory game. If you do it correctly, you see a very short clip of the song from "End of the Road" with the words "You got it!" across the picture.
The other extra is a "Learn the dance" thing. It shows you all the dance steps to a chorus of a song. Then the first picture gets highlighted and text appears telling you what to do. Then it moves to the next dance step.
Both extras are pathetically poor, especially the "learn the dance" feature - you have no control over it, it just shows you pictures of the dances. Also, the music in the background doesn't actually match the dance steps. It's very lame.

Ok... this is interesting.
on the single is Lisa singing though? huh wots that all about?

Me too. I'm not commenting on this subject anymore. It's boring! Although I will say, she def did go out of tune. Quite a few times at that. And thats my musical opinion, not to be nasty!

Incidentally, I wonder why they didn't dub over the audio glitch - they dubbed over the rest of the DVD!

lol i thought that... tho im guessing if they bubbed over it... it may throw the timing off ...
lol or maybe they just wanted to make the DVD imperfect...!
lol
did anyone notice the typo on the back of the cover???
:P I was proof reader when the DVD was released.... I would have got sacked for an error like that!!!

Mine doesn't! I spose it depends when you bought it... (I got mine the day it was released). If there was enough demand for it, a second run was probably printed, when they actually corrected the error.

1 year after the DVD EOTR was released, the 2-VCD version of it was released in Asia with the word "copy". It was then that I understand the meaning of that statement. I had always thought that the "cop" is another word for the "product" I bought..

I couldn't hear her out of tune on HOYH, but she went waaaaaaaaaay off on IKHSW
Shaggy
9th Mar 2004, 17:34
Urgh!!!!!! She didn't do a bad job of It's The Way You Make Me Feel. What are you on???
Shaggy

Actually, the question should be what am I on! Lol. Soz read it wrong! I still think I Know Him So Well sounded better than Hand On Your Heart but there ya go!

Sorry to disagree, but......
sing live
10th Mar 2004, 12:53
will i think hand on your heart sounds better than i know him so well on the ppv version because claire didn't sound right in the begining of ikhsw and didn't do the harmony well at the end of the song.....
she was singing well in the other live songs, though she was sometimes too loud, i think.....
but i do like her "wooooooooo" at the end of it's the way you make me feel..... that seems powerful to me....
~JACQUI~

I didn't like her singing at the start of IKHSW, cos she went waaay off, and did thruout the song. Faye forgot her last line of the song, that always bugs me when I watched it.

UH! People critisising my baby!
lol - im sorry but she didnt go outta tune (certainly not very much) on IKHSW...
The beginning sounds fine to me and its not Claire's fault if the harmony at the end wasnt as good as normal - look to Faye or Lisa (or them as a whole) for that!
Claire's voice was better than ever before really on that concert (esp her big note in WANE which is just genius) so....stop complaining :P lol

I think people should be grateful that it wasn't mimed! ;)

No, Im glad of that, but her voice at the start of IKHSW was sooooooooo off, and i think she realised it. Look at the expression on her face!
She got better throughout the song tho, and it wasnt faye and Lisa messing up, it was just their voices weren't very compatible that night!

Completely agree. It wasn't Claire who messed the harmony at the end up. I know this because Claire sings the main medley bit, not any harmony (at the end anyway) How ever, she was off at the start, but hey as Magic patch said, at least they made the effort to sing live. I'd rather hear them go out of tune a few times than watch them mime. Hey, every one makes mistakes!

hey shouldn't the songs performed on the VHS and DVD be the same except maybe the DVD may have some extra special features that a VHS can't have as the VHS has got less spaxce than DVDs?

They are the same apart from the "Special Extra Features"! ;)

Yeah the concert is exactly the same, just there's some 'special games' on the DVD which are a bit rubbish really. You can have a look at some screen-shots on the Generation Steps website.
